For Sa'di, as for virtually every major figure in classical Persian literature solid biographical information in any appreciable amount is virtually non-existent.
Sa'di's work is often referred to for its description of the history of ancient Persia. He is recognized as the first Persian poet to employ the lyric to illustrate
the principles and the problems of love.
The second work of Sa'di's, The Gulistan (or The Rose Garden), published in 1258, is a collection of poems and prose that document his travels. The Gulistan was first translated in 1787 and is very popular among Western readers of poetry.
This volume is a selection of Sa'di's Gulistan, rendered into English by Siavosh Fouladfar, and adorned with the beautiful calligraphy by Amir Ahmad Falsafi, and the magnificent illumination by Houshang Ne'mati.
